Sagunto honours local gymnast Hugo Valero for outstanding season
Sagunto City Council paid tribute this Thursday to Hugo Valero, a 17-year-old gymnast from Puerto de Sagunto, after a season with 16 medals and his call-up to Spain's junior national team for the World Championship in Pamplona in September.
Local athlete Hugo Valero, 17, was honoured by Sagunto City Council in the plenary hall, with Mayor Darío Moreno and Sports Councillor Javier Timón attending. The tribute follows an outstanding first season with the elite team of Club Aeróbic Moncada, where he won 16 medals: nine gold, six silver and one bronze, including two golds and a silver at the Spanish Championship.
Valero began practising aerobic gymnastics at age four at the María Inmaculada school in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), later training with Club Aeróbic Sagunto before moving up to national-elite level. He competes in individual, pairs, aerostep and aerodance events — group routines for eight athletes, with and without a step platform — recognised internationally since the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) added the discipline in 1995, with the Junior World Championship held since 1998.
The gymnast will represent Spain at the Junior World Championship in Pamplona this September. According to aytosagunto.es, with additional background from Wikipedia.
