Sagunto holds a minute of silence over a suspected gender killing
On Tuesday 12 May at 12 noon, the council, its staff and residents gathered outside municipal buildings to condemn the suspected gender-based murder of a woman in Madrid.
The council's Equality Area called the gathering after the suspected murder of a 21-year-old woman in Madrid. Members of the municipal council, council staff, residents and local groups stood outside public buildings to show their condemnation. The Equality office reminded the public of the support resources available: the 016 helpline, the 112 emergency number, the Equality Area's Women's Support Service and the Generalitat's Centre Dona 24 Hores. It also stressed the civic duty to report any suspicion of violence. The institutional response reinforces Sagunto's public stand against gender violence. According to official figures from the Spanish Government, 47 women were murdered through gender violence in 2025, and since 2003 the cumulative total stands at 1,360 fatal victims (aytosagunto.es).
