Sagunto council to debate water discounts, Via Verde trail and support for Ceuta
Sagunto holds its monthly ordinary plenary this Thursday, 3 September, with eighteen items on the table: water discounts, three resident honours, and motions on mobility and solidarity with Ceuta, starting at 5pm.
Discounts on water bills, the chance to get around town on a rental bike, and up to three honours for local residents: the agenda for Sagunto's next council plenary touches directly on residents' daily lives. The session is this Thursday, 3 September, starting at 5pm in the town hall, with the option to follow along from home online.
Anyone who cannot attend in person has another option: the session will be streamed openly online, via the council's YouTube channel and its Facebook, Instagram and X accounts. Eighteen items make up the evening's agenda, opening with the formality of approving the minutes of the previous session, held on 6 August, and closing, as usual, with an open round of questions between council groups.
Three residents and community groups will receive official recognition. Falla Luis Cendoya y Adyacentes (a traditional Fallas festival group) turns a hundred years old, and the local government is proposing to award it the Gold Medal of the city; Margarita Pin and Paqui Rondán Martí will each be considered for their own City Medal. The Culture section is rounded out by an administrative adjustment, filed under case 3/36, over how funds from the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (a regional tourism-funding scheme) are allocated, a matter handled by the Finance department.
International affairs also make it onto the plenary floor. Two separate texts — one signed jointly by VOX and the PP (People's Party), the other by EU-Unides Podem, which adds a reference to human rights — express support for Ceuta, the autonomous city that had 83,595 residents in 2025 according to Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE). A third declaration joins them, this one expressing solidarity with Colombia after the earthquake that struck the country on 10 August.
On mobility, the IP council group is asking for the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros greenway to be completed all the way to Puerto de Sagunto. It is an old mining-railway route that can currently be cycled or walked as far as Albalat de Taronchers; roughly 8 kilometres separate that endpoint from the city of Sagunto. Compromís is adding two motions of its own to the session: it wants the council to study launching a public bike-share service, and separately it is asking for Sagunto Castle to be lit up again at night — a story Sagunt al dia has covered in more detail in a separate piece, following the coverage it first got from elperiodic.com.
Household budgets are also up for debate this Thursday. The PP wants it to be easier for lower-income families to pay less for water and sewage, and is asking to widen the existing social discounts. The PSOE (Socialist party), meanwhile, is proposing that the crews who clean and maintain the countryside around the municipality during summer keep working for more weeks than originally planned.
Puerto de Sagunto is back on the agenda too, with VOX's proposal to look for a mixed public-private model to rescue the Gerencia chalets (a set of historic houses), which trace back to the former Ciudad Jardín estate the steelworks company built next to its head offices. EU-Unides Podem, finally, is asking to open up a space where the peñas (local festive associations) and social groups can meet and work together.
The rest of the session covers oversight of the local government: the mayor's office will report on the decisions it has signed off since the last plenary, and the council will review the already-audited 2025 accounts of the Valencian Community's Foundation for Industrial Heritage and Working Memory of Puerto de Sagunto. Between honours, mobility, heritage housing and gestures of international solidarity, September's plenary packs in a busy agenda that residents of Sagunto and Puerto de Sagunto will be able to follow live without leaving home.
